Wood is an important material used for purposes such as construction, fuel and manufacturing of a range of consumer products and packaging. Wood supply chains typically span multiple countries as the wood moves from harvesting, to various stages of manufacturing before arriving to the final consumer. Given the global diversity of different tree species, logging and timber production occurs mostly in forests in different regions of the world.
The world has already lost approximately half of its forests and what remains is increasingly under threat. Preventing further deforestation and degradation is critical for mitigating climate change and protecting both biodiversity and the communities who make their homes or livelihoods in forests. As human population continues to grow, so too will the demand for timber products. The unsustainable harvesting of timber is a leading driver of deforestation. Timber can be sustainable when harvested responsibly in a way that maintains the forest’s ecological function, protects its biodiversity and respects the rights of local communities.
As part of the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), Tesco has committed to achieving zero-net deforestation by 2020 in our sourcing of wood and paper products. Specifically, Tesco committed that all of our Tesco Own Brand wood and paper products will be either FSC/PEFC certified or from a recycled source by 2020. For the 2020 reporting year Tesco had achieved 99% of assessed lines meeting Tesco's target of FSC or PEFC certification.
Beyond our supply chain, we work collectively at an industry level and with other stakeholders (such as NGOs and governments), because we recognise that developing the right conditions for a sustainable timber market requires effective collaboration.
Our approach to zero-net deforestation wood and paper products is based on our Improve-Transform-Advocate approach to environmental sustainability.
Improve: achieving sustainable wood in our supply chain
- Tesco has committed that all of our Tesco Own Brand wood and paper products will be either FSC/PEFC certified or from a recycled source by 2020.
Transform: encouraging innovative solutions
- We will support innovative solutions that transform industry’s approach to timber sourcing (e.g. our collaboration with the environmental NGO, Canopy, to support transformation of the viscose industry).
Advocate: mobilising others for action
- We will continue to work with others to engage key stakeholders in producing and consuming countries.
Tesco’s target is for 100% of assessed lines of paper/wood products to be FSC/PEFC or from a recycled source across the Group. In 20/21, 99% of assessed lines were certified FSC or PEFC or were from recycled sources.
